2008 General Information

Remember to stretch before and after you walk.  Properstretching will help prevent injury and may increase your range of motion. Stretch gently, holding your stretch for 20-30 seconds and only far enough to feel your muscles elongating.  Do not stretch to the point that you feel pain.

Make sure you’re wearing well-fitting walking shoes and comfortable, supportive socks.

Remember to wear sunscreen.  Even if the day is overcast or cloudy, UVA and UVB rays will still burn.

Drink plenty of water before, during and after your walk to prevent dehydration and keep your body cool.  There are water/refreshments stations along the walk route.

Remember safety while walking.  Obey all traffic laws.  Be aware of your surroundings, including moving vehicles, children, pets and cracks or bumps on the sidewalks or roads.  Check for approaching vehicles before crossing streets, even if the green light or “walk” sign is on.

Be aware of how you feel while you are walking. If you feel faint or dizzy, stop and advise another person.  Assistance and first aid are readily available.
